Go Solar...San Diego County!

Keeping up with the City of San Diego’s recent initiatives to encourage homeowners and businesses to install green, renewable energy products such as photovoltaics, the County of San Diego is following in the Finest City in America’s footsteps.  San Diego County has just announced that it is partnering up with the private sector to offer property owners both information and access to a variety of commercial banks willing to make loans to qualified borrowers.  This effort, the County claims, is for those “who are interested in making energy efficient and/or solar energy property improvement in an effort to promote regional energy independence.”

So how attractive are the loan rates one might ask?   Well, the County’s “Go Solar” website gives the disclaimer that “the details of individual loan programs available will vary based on the participating bank and the property owner’s qualifications.”

Here is the 5 step process that the County outlines in order to begin the process:

  1. Review the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for more details about the program and how to get started.
  2. Obtain written estimates from a minimum of three licensed contractors.
  3. Contact the commercial banks that have agreed to make funds available to qualified borrowers for making energy efficiency improvements, and apply for a loan.
  4. Apply for any necessary building permits, together with your contractor at your local building or planning office. Residents of the County’s unincorporated areas can contact the County of San Diego Department of Planning and Land Use.
  5. The assessed value of your property will not increase as a result of adding most solar systems, with the exception of swimming pool and hot tub heaters. For more information contact the San Diego County Assessor/Recorder/County Clerk at (858) 505-6262

Anyone interested in the details of the program can to go the Go Solar website at http://www.sdcounty.ca.gov/fg3/gosolarfaq.html.  Its an encouraging beginning…

San Diego Earth Day 2009 at Balboa Park

San Diego Earth Day 2009 at Balboa Park

San Diegans gathered in Balboa Park this past Sunday on an especially warm day to celebrate Earth Day amongst the myriad colors and smells of budding flowers, food stalls and green information booths.  As toddlers and animals splashed around and cooled off in the various water fountains throughout the San Diego landmark park, companies, non-profits and government agencies exhibited their green products and information to the public in the hopes of beginning the transformation of “greening” America’s Finest City.

San Diego Earth Fair 2009

San Diego Earth Fair 2009

Green building information and product booths were scattered amongst the much desired lemon-aid and ice cream vendors that were thrilled by the heat.  The U.S. Green Building Council San Diego Chapter, true to its word as the center of green building education in San Diego, had countless volunteers discussing the merits and “Three Es” (Environment, Economy, Equity) of green building.  Green building product company representatives, such as Richard Goodman from Laguna Bamboo (www.lagunabamboo.com) answered questions on the virtues of using rapidly renewable wood products instead of conventional wood to prevent deforestation while Gabriel Coughran of SanDiegoSips (www.sandiegosips.com) explained the energy efficiency and structural integrity of using sips to build structures.  And the lovely green building duo, Evelyn and David Shields of Kwik-Build (www.kwikbuildpanels.com), extoled about the energy saving benefits of the kwik build panels.

Green building professionals and service providers were also on hand in various stalls to promote their ecologically-friendly businesses.  Jon Ray, President of PaintGreen (www.paintgreen.com), was onhand to discuss his growing business of painting homes and commercial buildings using zero-VOC paints that protect both the real estate and environment.  Not only is Jon a great painter, but he’s a top notch guy!  Green cleaning services such as Pure (www.purecleaningservices.com) and Green Cleen (www.greencleen.net) shared with the information and water-thirsty visitors the green cleaning products they use that won’t harm your family or tweek out your pet cat.

After  getting our sugar high from the free Cliff bars being given out by the thousands, we merrily made our way past various groups practicing their First Amendment right to free speech in search of green energy products and service providers.  Applied Solar (www.appliedsolar.com), a solar product manufacturer displaying its sun-soaking, electricity producing photovoltiacs, while a number of solar service providers such as Baker Electric Solar, Butler Sun Solutions (www.butlersunsolutions.com),  and Sullivan Solar Power (www.sullivansolarpower.com) talked about PV and solar thermal installation on homes and commercial properties.

As the mid-day sun began to wane, so did our energy.  We proceeded to head back for some cool refreshments and enjoying the laughter and company of friends at the buildgreenworld roof-top headquarters nearby to watch the San Diego Bay and sunset in America’s Finest Green City…
